Why do we think the EU nationals aren't essential though? Could be argued both ways. Agreed that with an open border policy, you can't control it either way, but the inference that extra EU nationals are a strain on the NHS doesn't necessarily hold out - Don't have the figures to hand, but think I read that most of the NHS' expenditure goes on people over 45 - How likely is that to be the migrants (from anywhere) that we're talking about? Also don't forget the figures showing EU migrants alone contribute £20bn (net) in tax.

I'd repeat the point I was making earlier, namely that I think we're asking a lot of the wrong questions - Why is there a housing shortage (this isn't new), why are there so many UK nationals that are unemployed and what are we doing about that? And a load of etceteras.

What you're raising are valid concerns, but it's simplistic to just pin that on one thing in my view, successive governments have failed this country and I'm not sure the EU is a factor in the way others do.
